It was a couple of month ago when i stumbled somewhere in the social media universe upon a project that directly catched my attention. ‘For thousands of miles’, a self-financed independent film project, following a lonely bicycle rider on his way from coast to coast. What does it take to leave everything behind and go on a journey like this? The film will be a documentary about a bicycle trip on the first hand, but as Mike Ambs, the man behind the project, points out, also about motivation and the passion behind it. The principle photography lasted 64 days in 2007. The film is not edited yet, but what is ready to watch is the behind the scenes film, properly called 64 days. It is really personal sometimes and gives a great insight in what it takes to get a project like this going. But as Mike created more than enough content to get you familiar with the project and how to support it and everything else you ever dreamt of to get to know about making a film, check out their website Project:Pedal for more information plus the films. But be careful, it might happen that you get lost for some hours… And as a starter: Here is the first part of ‘64 days’…

(via An Interview with Mike Ambs pt.1) For the past six years Mike Ambs has been working on ‘Project Pedal’. Project Pedal consists of three primary areas, the blog, ‘64 Days’ the making of series and of course the film itself. In his own words, ‘Pedal’ is, ‘A feature length documentary about riding bikes, taking chances and pushing yourself to do the things that scare and overwhelm you.’

NodaVelo: Re-cycle - Here again, Mike Ambs and his Project Pedal. Although we have shown his video’s here and there on this blog…it is nice to see that he is keeping up great work with showcasing that love and the feeling of being on a bike…I envy his ability to capture emotion.

Now, I know that you have probably seen this here already…but here again shows the emotion that I speak of…not to mention drives the point home even further that music can really help in setting that tone. Every time I see this clip,it reminds me of that feeling of letting go mentally and spiritually, accepting the fact that there is no getting out of the rain….just continue to pedal through it.

Neil Blake: Project Pedal - I usually reserve this blog for my own work, but sometimes you run across something everyone should know about. For the past several years Mike Ambs has been working on a documentary about a cross country cycling trip. As an independent filmmaker he’s run into countless hurdles and had his share of setbacks, but the film continues to move forward. For more information and an intro to the project, click here.

My cousin Jason showed me the project a few years ago and I’ve been following the film’s progress since. There is also a behind the scenes look at the making of the film the first few episodes of which can be seen here.
